A supermoon appears bigger and brighter in the sky because it is closer than usual to the Earth. Technically one occurs any time the Moon is within 224,000 miles. Its more formal name is a perigee-syzygy moon: perigree meaning the moon is orbiting at its closest distance to the Earth and syzygy meaning the Earth, Moon, and Sun are aligned. Not exclusive to Full Moons, Supermoons can happen during any phase, including lunar and solar eclipses. Potent and powerful, Supermoons are believed to amplify the astrological traits of that zodiac sign. So pay attention if you are feeling the Supermoon’s effects more intensely than other New or Full Moons!
